Flamengo forward Gabriel Barbosa has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, according to reports from Brazil.

The 26-year-old Brazilian international sustained the setback during Flamengo's match against Santos on Sunday in the Campeonato Brasileiro.

Barbosa is expected to miss at least four months, which means he will be unavailable for the rest of the season and potentially the start of next year's tournament.

The striker has been a key player for Flamengo this season, scoring 11 goals in 24 games across all competitions.

He was also called up by Brazil for their upcoming friendly matches against South Korea and Saudi Arabia.

Barbosa's injury comes at a crucial time for Flamengo, who are currently second in the Campeonato Brasileiro table.

The club's head coach, Marcelo Oliveira, has confirmed that the team will need to find a replacement for Barbosa as they look to secure a top-four finish and qualify for the Copa Libertadores.

However, there is no word yet on whether Barbosa will undergo surgery or if he can return to play within the four-month timeframe.

In the meantime, Flamengo will have to rely on other forwards such as Gabriel Jesus, who scored two goals in his side's win over Santos on Monday, and the young talent Gustavo Marques.
